Gates of Telendra: Book One

ACFW Semi-Finalist - Speculative Category

Trapped between warring civilizations, which side do you choose with little knowledge of either?

A mission gone horribly wrong.

Geo-engineer Lt. Keely Hollis is stranded on an uncharted planet, caught in the crossfire of a fierce interplanetary war.

One side rules the system with ruthless technological supremacy wielding energy weapons and a cruelty bred into their code.

The mismatched resistance battles with swords, crossbows, and an unshakable creed that sustains them.

When Keely saves a resistance commander, a formidable but intriguing man, she expects to be met with gratitude. Instead, he brands her an enemy collaborator and threatens her with death.

Will Keely switch allegiance to those who appear destined for victory? Or will she sacrifice everything to start a life she never imaged?

The war demands a choice. Whatever she decides, there is no turning back.

HISTORICAL LOCATIONS IN CHOICE OF ALLIANCE

Project Name

The Gates

The inspiration for the gates came from my early days as a flight attendant for an international airline. I was based in New York City. It was a gray, overcast, winter day when I left on one of my first trips. None of the trees showed signs of leaves yet and the only fruit spilling out of the local mom and pop store was apples and oranges.

Some thirteen hours later, I walked into summer.

Beach goers in some of the skimpiest suit I’d ever seen thronged the shore at Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches in Rio, Bazil. Hang gliders sailed on the warm breezes. When I walked into the hotel restaurant, a table twelve feet long was piled high with mangos, papayas, passion fruit, pineapple, guava, and others I couldn’t even name.

Many times, after that I changed seasons flying from one hemisphere to the other. Once, I landed in winter, shocked to leave the airport and find six inches of snow and ice on the ground. I’d forgotten to bring a heavy coat because it’d been eighty degrees when I left home. The gates in Choice of Alliance reflects those abrupt season changes I experienced during my flying days.
